WHAT IS MANGOSTEEN?

Mangosteen is a tropical fruit that grows primarily in hot tropical countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and other tropical countries. It is dark purple in colour and about 3 inches in diameter. the size of a small peach or apple. You open the fruit by pressing it between the palm of your hand until it breaks open and it does so easily when it is ripe. The rind is nearly one inch thick and at the centre is a soft and fleshy bit like the head of a garlic. The taste is simply divine. Exquisite! No wonder the natives called it the “queen of the fruits”.

The subsurface chemistry of the Mangosteen pericarp comprises an array of polyphenolic acids including Xanthones and tannins which assures astringency to discourage infestation and depredation by insects, fungi , plant viruses, bacteria and animals while the fruit is immature. The change of color from green to deep purple and the softening of the pericarp/rind indicates that the fruit is ripe and the seeds have matured and fully developed. The mangosteen tree must be grown in consistently warm conditions as exposure below 40 degrees farenheight will kill a mature tree,

The main active constituent of the Mangosteen fruit is called Xanthones, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds, structurally similar to bioflavonoids. Science has identified about 200 Xanthones and forty of them are found in the Mangosteen fruit.
